Robert J. Brown 77, of Wapakoneta died at 10:05 A.M. May 9, 2011 at his residence.
He was born September 5, 1933 in Wapakoneta to Lewis D. & Helen M. (Ruck) Brown who both preceded him in death. On September 17, 1955 he married Betty A. McEvoy who survives in Wapakoneta.
He is also survived by four children; Diane (Rick) Place of Wapakoneta, Rick (Chris) Brown of Whitefish, MT, Steve (Mary) Brown of Cridersville, and Ron (Lisa) Brown of Troy; seven grandchildren Joshua Place, Jared Morine, Noah Settlage, Mallory Settlage, Clayton Brown, Katie Brown, and Allison Brown; two brothers Richard (Candace) Brown of Singapore and William Brown of Wapakoneta; a sister Betty Suchland of Columbus; a sister-in-law Carolyn Brown of Bluffton; and a brother-in-law Arthur Fischer of Versailles.
He was preceded in death by a brother Donald Brown of Bluffton and a sister Ruth Fischer of Versailles.
Robert was a 1951 graduate of St. Joseph Catholic School where he was the class salutatorian. He retired in 1992 from the Telephone Service Company in Wapakoneta after 43 A½ years of service. He had served as general manager, vice-president and finally as president from 1984 until his retirement. He was also a past director and member of the Wapakoneta Area Chamber of Commerce, president and director of the Lions Club, and director and secretary of the Northwestern Ohio Cellular Telephone Association in Columbus. He was also active in the American Cancer Society as a chairman. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus in Wapakoneta.
Woodworking was his hobby, fishing was his favorite sport, but music was his passion. He was an accomplished woodworker and was a member of woodworking clubs in Ohio and Florida. He was also known for making his own instruments such as Violins, Mandolins, Hammer Dulcimers, Harps, and Steel Guitars. He played the fiddle and steel guitar for over 25 years in the square dance bands. Mostly, he will be missed and remembered as a loving and caring husband, father, and grandfather.
Mass of Christian Burial will begin 10:30 A.M. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Wapakoneta. The Reverend Harold Brown will be officiating. The family will receive friends in the St. Joseph's Parish Life Center following the Mass. A private family burial will take place at Gethsemane Cemetery in St. Marys.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be directed to Community Health Professionals Hospice Services, St. Joseph Catholic Church, or donor's choice.
