Richard Lyman Gossard, 73, of Wapakoneta died suddenly at his residence on Monday, May 26, 2014.

He is survived by his wife Carol (Walter) Gossard, son Richard Gossard, Jr, and daughter Barbara (John) Steger.

Dick was a 1958 graduate of Sidney High School, earned a Bachelor of Arts degree Bowling Green State University, and a Master of Education degree at Xavier.

He and his wife and children moved to Naples, Florida in 1979, where he and Carol taught school in the Collier County School System until they retired in 1999. Upon retirement, Dick spent time each week teaching adults to read, and he and Carol both tutored school children in a variety of classroom subjects.

Dick was an avid gardener, spending just slightly more time working his garden than sharing the fruits of his labors, often leaving small bouquets of roses on doorsteps, and office reception counters, as well as boxes of fruits and vegetables.

Enjoying tending the flowers he grew gave him an appreciation of garden and shrub flowers to the exclusion of cut flowers, and his family knows he would appreciate donations made to support sanctuary for the Florida Panther in care of the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge 3860 Tollgate Boulevard, Suite 300 Naples, FL 34114.
Funeral services will be held at the 11:00 a.m. Saturday May 31, 2014 at First United Methodist Church in Sidney, Ohio. Pastor Jane Madden will be officiating. Friends may call from 9:00 am until the time of the service at the church. Burial will follow at Pearl Cemetery in Swanders, Ohio.
