A 1948 graduate of Blume High School, Richard received his Bachelor's Degree from the International Business College, Fort Wayne, IN, and then earned his Ohio CPA. He then began his career as an accountant, specializing in agriculture auditing, retiring as a partner from H.G. Snyder and Associates after a 35 year career.  Richard was a member of the Farm Bureau and was active in the Children's International Summer Villages, Miami County Chapter, where he served as treasurer.  Richard was also an active member of St. John's United Church of Christ, Troy, OH and St. Paul UCC in Wapakoneta.

When he wasn't working or participating in those organizations, Richard loved playing cards and dancing.  He belonged to several bridge and euchre groups, in Troy, Wapak and Lima. Richard was also a member of the Cotillion Club, a dance group, where he and Mary Lou enjoyed ballroom dancing and polkas.  Many memories were made while traveling and at the cottage in Michigan. He loved to drive the boat and take his children and friends skiing.  Golf was another favorite way to spend his free time.
