Michael H. Wurst, 72, of Columbus, formerly of Wapakoneta, passed away at 8:38 p.m. January 2, 2022 at Mount Carmel Health – St. Ann’s, Westerville.

He was born on April 3, 1949 in Lima, OH to Edward M. & Vera L. (Nolan) Wurst II who preceded him in death.  On June 12, 1971 he married Bonnie C. Howell and she survives in Columbus.

Survivors include three children Benjamin (Amy) Wurst, Jennifer (Dennis) Rounds, Elizabeth Wurst; 4 grandchildren Emma, Marin, Samuel, Edward; a brother Roger (Linda) Wurst; a nephew Chad; a niece Megan and several great-nieces and nephews.

Mike was a 1967 graduate of Delphos St. John’s High School.  He attended The Ohio State University where he earned a Bachelor’s in Science Education and then the University of Dayton where he earned a Master’s in Education.  He also attended the Lima Technical College where he achieved a degree as a Register Nurse.  Michael’s career in education span from being a High School science teacher in eastern Ohio, practicing as a nurse and an EMT in Mercer County along with Wapakoneta EMS and was an EMT instructor at Lima Technical College.  He retired from the Auglaize County Health Department.

Mike was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church, Delphos, St. Joseph Catholic Church, Wapakoneta and St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Columbus.

Mike was very active in the Black Swamp Boy Scout Council and the Knights of Columbus, Wapakoneta.  He greatly enjoyed being in charge of the St. Joseph 4th of July Festival.  He liked doing yard work, especially the black raspberries (a joke – he was outstanding in his field.)  He always had a great sense of humor.  He liked to mail jokes to several friends and to his grandchildren.  He always had a kind word for everyone he knew.  He enjoyed time with his grandchildren and several other who called him honorary Grandpa.  The last joke he didn’t get to hear – a 5 year old who met him at a Halloween party said Mike was the best Viking in a wheelchair that he ever saw.

Funeral services will begin at 4:00 p.m. Monday, January 10, 2022 at Schlosser Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Wapakoneta with Rev. Jedidiah Tritle officiating.  Family and friends may call from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service and then from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.  Burial of his cremated remains will be interred at St. Joseph Cemetery at a later date.
