Melvin G. "Mel" Schroeder, 91, of Wapakoneta died at 4:15 p.m. Friday November 6, 2015 at his residence.
He was born in Elyria, OH on October 7, 1924 to Gustave & Clara (Pietz) Schroeder who preceded him in death. On June 26, 1949 he married Shirley M. Gordon and she survives in Wapakoneta.
Survivors also include two sons and a daughter; Larry (Christie) Schroeder of LaFayette, Tim (Donna) Schroeder of Bellville, Rebecca Schroeder of Wapakoneta, 6 grandchildren Heather (Ben) Hurst of Hamilton, Lori (Jerry Kohler) Murphy of Elida, Amanda (Keith Diller) Davis of LaFayette, Kevin Schroeder of Lima, Alecia (Sam) Dole of Reynoldsburg, Sean (Jessica Kinsman) Byrne of Batavia and several great and great-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a grandson Richard G. Schroeder.
Melvin graduated from Lorain High School in 1943. That same year he entered the Army Air Corp. serving with the 8th Air Force as a sergeant. He was a life member of the V.F.W. Post 8445 and First English Lutheran Church, Wapakoneta. He also coached little league in Buckland and was also an umpire. He served as an EMT for the city of Wapakoneta and was a member of the V.F.W. Honor Guard. He loved his grandchildren and enjoyed watching them in their activities.
Funeral services will begin at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday November 11, 2015 at First English Lutheran Church, Wapakoneta. Pastor Neil Brady will be officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery, Lima with military rites being performed by the V.F.W. Post 1275. Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Schlosser Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Wapakoneta.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be directed to First English Lutheran Church, Wapakoneta.
