George E. Henkener, 90, of Wapakoneta, passed away at 12:28 p.m., February 18, 2017, at St. Rita's Medical Center, Inpatient Hospice. He was born near New Knoxville, Ohio on March 29, 1926, to Cornelius and Alma (Vordermark) Henkener, who have preceded him in death. On November 25, 1948, he married Patricia A. Kelly, who survives in Wapakoneta. They were blessed with over 68 years of marriage.
Survivors also include his two sons, Craig M. (Debra) Henkener and Kim A. (Melanie) Henkener, both of Wapakoneta; three grandsons, Michael C. (Libby) Henkener, of Elida, James P. Cooper, of Lakeland, FL, and Brian A. (Kristi) Henkener, of Hamilton; three granddaughters, Kristina L. (Lance) Soliday, of Sidney, Angela M. Elshoff, of St. Marys, and Shannon M. (Charles) Babu, of Cambridge, MA; seven great-grandchildren, Taylor Elshoff, Gage Henkener, Emmitt Henkener, Chase Soliday, Vincent Babu, Anthony Babu, and Duke Henkener; and one sister, Eileen Gillespie, of Columbus.
He was preceded in death by two daughters, Janet Lynn Henkener and Angela Suzanne Cooper; two sisters, Margaret (Walter) Aufderhaar and Carol (Paul) Wilt; and his brother-in-law, Charles Gillespie.
Mr. Henkener was a WWII veteran of the United States Army, serving under General Patton in the liberation of Europe. George was a foreman for many years at the Wapak Farmer's Grain. For twenty years, he worked as a technician for Proctor & Gamble, Lima. In his free time, George loved to restore antique tractors and travel. He also enjoyed gardening, fishing, and woodworking.
A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, February 22, 2017 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Wapakoneta, with Rev. Patrick Sloneker officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, with military rites by the VFW Post 8445. Friends may call from 2 – 4 and 6 – 8 p.m. Tuesday, February 21, 2017 at Schlosser Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Wapakoneta.
