Edward L. "Ed" Shockey, 88, passed away the evening of April 21, 2016 at his home. He was born on October 14, 1927, in Wapakoneta to John & Marie Burden Shockey, who have preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his step-father, Melvin Huebner, who helped raise him. On November 8, 1947, he married Roselyn M. Byrne, who survives in Wapakoneta. Together they shared 68 years of marriage.
Survivors also include two daughters, Darlene M. & Gary Binkley, and Sharon A. & William Sammetinger, both of Wapakoneta; a daughter-in-law, Esther Shockey, of West Virginia; eight grandchildren, Benjamin & Karin Shockey, Meghan & Joshua Welch, Charis Taylor, Amy Dils, Kyle Binkley, Craig & Cindy Sammetinger, Christopher & Jenny Sammetinger, and Nicholas & Jenna (Aller) Sammetinger; fifteen great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Larry & Judy Huebner, of Englewood, and William Shockey, of Florida.
He was preceded in death by his son, Roger; and his sister, Anna Henry.
Ed attended Blume High School, before enlisting with the United States Army. He served from January 15, 1946 with the Military Police Battalion in Germany, before being honorably discharged on July 13, 1947. His proudest military memory was being selected to guard a supply of antibiotics, being sent by rail to our troops in Germany. Upon returning home, he worked for a short time with Turner's Toys before beginning a long career with the Wapakoneta Machine Shop. Ed was truly a man with a strong work ethic. He enjoyed his years at the Machine Shop, working in the Heat Treating Department, retiring after 38 years of service.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. He had a passion for politics and he was always up to date on current events. On the occasions that a news channel wasn't on, he could be found cheering on The Ohio State University Buckeyes, or Notre Dame. However, his first love was family. Ed was a caring man, who was always putting others before himself. Family was first. He and his wife spent countless hours and miles together, touring the country in their car, always on the back roads. Ed was one of a kind, and will be deeply missed.
A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 26, 2016 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Wapakoneta. Father Daniel Hunt will officiate. Interment will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, with military rites by the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 8445. Friends may call from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday, April 25, 2016 at Schlosser Funeral Home & Cremation Services.
