Doris I. Sunderland, 102, of Wapakoneta, Ohio was greeted by her Lord and Savior at 12:37 PM, Wednesday, December 13, 2023 at Otterbein Assisted Living Facility, Cridersville with her family holding her hands, following a stroke.  She was born on November 12, 1921 in Duchouquet Township, Auglaize County, Ohio to Frank L. and Carrie C. (Freymuth) Tippie, who have preceded her in death.  On June 14, 1942, at St. Paul United Church of Christ, she married David H. Sunderland, who passed away on December 22, 1993.

Survivors include two daughters, Linda Baker, of Wapakoneta and Rebecca (Karl) Whetstone, of The Villages, FL; four grandchildren, Lisa (Nick) Heitz, Kerri (Kevin) Pees, Brock (Michele) Whetstone, Trevor (Meg) Whetstone; eight great-grandchildren, Brittany Gray, Jeremy (Kiyla) Heitz, Bethany (Brandon) Turner, Aubrey Heitz, Kaitlyn (Adi) Silaghi, Caleb (Sydney) Pees, Karoline Pees, Grayson Whetstone, Elizabeth, Dominic Liliana, Raphael Whetstone; a step-great-grandson, Erick (Mikayla) Luise; a great-great granddaughter Maivery Heitz and another on the way.

Doris was preceded in death by son-in-law, William Baker.

A 1939 graduate of Blume High School, Doris was the perfect farmers wife, always welcoming anyone who came to the door making good old-fashioned dinners for all.  She was a superb pie baker.  She greatly enjoyed when the neighbors got together to butcher.  Their family farm is now being tended to by the seventh and eighth generation and has been honored to receive the Auglaize County Centennial Ancestral Farm Award.  She was a meticulous bookkeeper.  She enjoyed helping her husband on the farm and traveling, but all else paled compared to the love she had for all of her family.

She was a life member of St. Paul United Church of Christ, where she was a member of the St. Paul Ladies Guild, and Circle 3.  Doris was also active in the Wapakoneta Woman’s Club and the Wapakoneta Senior Citizens.  She enjoyed participating in the Two Mile Sewing Club, which was started by her grandmother.  In her younger years, she had been a member of the Wapakoneta Soroptimist and had enjoyed bowling and playing cards.

Special thanks to Otterbein for her wonderful care and St. Rita’s Hospice for keeping her comfortable her final two days.

Services will begin at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 16, 2023 at Schlosser Funeral Home & Cremation Services.  Rev.
