Dean Cummings, 82, of Wapakoneta died unexpectedly Friday morning January 30, 2015 at his residence. He was born in rural Auglaize County to Walter L. & Bessie Mae (Neal) Cummings who preceded him in death. On February 27, 1955 he married Naomi Cook who survives in Wapakoneta.
Survivors also include two daughters; Sheryl (Steven) Froehlich of Ithaca, NY; Lynne (Ken) German of Virginia Beach, VA; a son Kevin Cummings of Chapel Hill, NC; 7 grandchildren Christopher, Jonathan and Timothy Froehlich; Madelaine, Eliza, Brooke, and Iris German; and 4 great-grandchildren Hayden, Eli, Nadia and Dimitri Froehlich; and a brother Willard Cummings. He was preceded in death by a sister Marilyn Line.
Dean graduated from Waynesfield High School in 1950 and Olivet Nazarene University in 1954. He served with distinction in the U.S. Army from November 1955 until November 1957 and received multiple letters of commendation. He was employed by General Motors as a cost engineer and then by Litton Industries Missile Guidance and Control Division in Los Angeles as an engineering administrator before returning to Waynesfield to manage and eventually own the Cummings Grain Company for many years.
A dedicated and disciplined student of the Scriptures, he served as an ordained Christian minister with Real Life Ministries (1978 to 1989) eventually becoming a director of that organization overseeing campus outreaches on more than 25 college campuses in the U.S. and Canada. He returned to Wapakoneta in 2005 to enjoy reuniting with friends and to appreciate once again the atmosphere and friendships so common to rural America. He was an avid cyclist and a regular participant on the Great Ohio Bicycle Adventure. He was employed by Lowes in Wapakoneta since 2011 and attended St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Cridersville.
Funeral services will begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday February 7, 2015 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Cridersville. Pastor Steven Froehlich with officiate with Pastor James Couser assisting. Burial will follow at Willow Branch Cemetery, Waynesfield where military rites will be performed by the V.F.W. Post #8445.
